Virtual NIN (vNIN)

Virtual NIN

This Virtual NIN is a tokenized version of a user's actual NIN which allows institutions to verify the actual NIN without putting the individual’s data privacy at risk.

The virtual NIN is a unique 16-character alphanumeric token comprising 12 digits, sandwiched between 4 alphabets. An example of a Virtual NIN is AB-0123-4567-8910-YZ

The hyphens are not part of the virtual NIN and should not be passed when making an API call.
They are only used for easy readability andΒ presentation.

Important

Users must generate their Virtual National Identification Number (vNIN) via USSD or the NIMC mobile app and provide it for verification.

Please note, the vNIN will expire 72 hours after it is generated.

Generating a vNIN

There are two ways to generate a virtual NIN:
1️⃣ Via USSD
- To generate a Virtual NIN via USSD, dial *346* 3* Your NIN* AgentCode#
- An SMS message will be sent back to you containing the Virtual NIN generated for you.

2️⃣ Through the NIMC app
- Download the NIMC App
- Click on "Get Virtual NIN"
- Select "Input Enterprise short-code" and type 715461
- Click "Submit" and your virtual NIN will be generated.

Use Case

Previously, organizations required their users to provide their actual NIN (which was passed through our API) to verify their identity.

With the implementation of the virtual NIN, organizations no longer need their customers to provide their actual NIN. Users can now provide a specific and uniquely generated virtual NIN which will be used to verify their identity. Now, instead of passing a user's NIN through our API, only the vNIN is passed for the verification to be done.
