Introducing iGree: The New BVN Consent Management System

Introduction

Have you heard about the newest development in the BVN verification process? The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the issuer of BVN, has introduced a consent management layer to ensure the protection of the personal data of Nigerians with registered BVNs. As a result, the Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), which manages and maintains the BVN database, has created a consent management platform known as iGree.

What is iGree?

But what exactly is iGree? iGree is a centralized platform that allows for authentication and consent management for web and mobile applications. It unifies identity across services, service providers, and use cases. Essentially, it's a user interface integrated into a merchant's end-user onboarding process that enables NIBSS to collect consent directly from the BVN holder.

Parties involved in the iGree process

So, who are the parties involved in the iGree process? NIBSS will be the administrator of the platform, collecting consent from BVN holders. QoreID, a VerifyMe company, operates as a technology liaison to enable accredited merchants to access BVN. The merchant has a direct relationship with the BVN holder and initiates the verification request. Finally, the BVN holder provides QoreID with consent to access their data.

The iGree process

The iGree process is simple and user-friendly. To verify a BVN, the BVN holder only needs to complete a few steps on the iGree interface to grant consent for NIBSS to release their information.
This process can be incorporated into the merchant's app, for the users to seamlessly complete the BVN consent process. They simply provide their BVN number, complete 2-factor authentication using an OTP, and click "allow" to grant access to their BVN data.

Implementation of iGree

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has planned for the iGree system to be used for all Bank Verification Number (BVN) verifications. Merchants and service providers can access iGree through API endpoints and software development kits (SDKs).
The VerifyMe team is working on implementing the necessary infrastructure and will provide information on how to use the service.
